June Task

Postby rstraight » Tue Jun 01, 2010 3:30 pm

Ok, I've checked the past few months and didn't see this one. Aleatoric music. This month let's create a composition that includes chance elements. Let some feature be determined by an external and possibly inappropriate process. For instance, creating a motif from the sound of a wind chime or a chord progression from dice.
(This doesn't necessarily have to be horribly dissonant.)

Ooh, now that is interesting. Does getting your cat to play keyboards count?

Having just made a set of wind chimes for the garden, this one has really caught my imagination!

I also have one of my big black cats who insists on "helping" me if I play while he's sat next to me on the sofa...

I'll bet there's some fascinating submissions this month. Nice one! :D

Trying to get my head around this!
Aleatoric - chance music hmmmm

ok, well, I have been having a ball recently with my new to me Yammy complete with Floyd Rose wammy bar and I can do quite a few tricks with it now, but most of the time I am a bit hit and miss especially when trying the Satriani bend the bar down with yer left fretting hand whilst just touching the strings with the thumb of the left hand in a sort of getting a harmonic type of way and then with the right hand and plectrum picking an appripriate string and then waggling the bar according to whatever noise emerges...will that fit the term Aleatoric ????

comments?
I can't get to the phone right now as I am busy subverting the empire.......

:D

If the sound you make happens by chance, I guess it could be said to fit the term... ;)

Would it be "more" aleatoric if you introduced an element of randomness to "when" you go for the whammy waggle? Perhaps check tonight's lottery results and introduce the waggle at beats in the music that match the numbers?

Paul.
